The Ice lantern Art Fair is the earliest and biggest open-air artistic exhibition of the ice lantern in the world. It was initiated in 1963 in Zhaolin Park and held every winter since 1985 along with the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival. Nowadays, it covers an area of 6.5 hectare (about 16 acres) and generally uses about 2,000 steres ice (about 71000 cubic feet) every time. It shows about 1,500 pieces of traditional ice lanterns with different themes. It is listed as one of the 35 national rare and wonderful scenic spots by the National Tourist Office.


The Ice Lantern Exhibition is an outstanding achievement of Harbin, where exploits and utilizes the local ice resources from the Songhua River. The craftsmen of the ice-lantern are from America, Japan, Singapore, Canada, Russia and altogether more than 10 countries. They will join in a competition in purpose of interchanging their skills. This ice lantern art fair is now the biggest and oldest one of its kind, and the largest outdoor ice lantern art fair with the classic traditional programs. It has been sung high praises by many Chinese state leaders and created 7 Guinness World Records in these years.


The materials of the lantern making are from the ice in the Songhua River, water and colored lights. Piling, building, laying, sculpting, spraying, watering, setting the ice according to different themes and overall arrangements in the park, the artists from all over the world will display you myriad fantastic lanterns before you! Ice building, ice sculptures, ice waterfalls, ice parterres, ice sliding boards, ice calligraphy, ice miniature gardens, ice ad, ice flowers, ice mountains... form a wonder garden here, wherever you move, what come into your sight is the diverse beautiful lanterns


Ice-lantern is a traditional art in the northeast of China. People here are delight to show these ice lanterns to celebrate festivals, such as Spring Festival and Lantern Festival. Now during the period of Harbin Ice and Snow Festival held on January 5th every year, tourists can enjoy the amazing show of ice-lantern and other winter games, such as sailing boat on the freezing river, hitting the ice monkeys, seeing the wedding on the ice, skating and watching the competition of winter swimming.
