Jiuxian Garden Village is a typical village for the Yangshuo area in many ways. Many of the adult locals work outside of the village now; the men are attracted to the easy money from bamboo rafting and the ladies have many options picking fruits in season, especially kumquats in the hills above Baisha. Enough continue with farming for the local paddies to be productive but this remains hard and poorly-paid work. About 200 metres away from the bank of Yulong River, Jiuxian is an ancient village full of Chinese traditional cultures as well as buildings.

The old part of the village offers the most interest for visitors with many beautiful Qing Dynasty buildings in various states of repair. Doors are often missing but you should be aware that buildings do belong to someone and seek permission to wander so as not to cause offence. Taking photos is generally fine, though, again, if you would like close-ups of people it is important to seek permission first.
