This Summer, I got an opportunity to visit Xihu Lake, a fairyland have attracted me for several years.
Following Linda, our tour guide from Chinaholidays , we arrived at the West Lake Scenic Area in the morning. The lake is surrounded by hills on three sides and faces downtown Hangzhou on the fourth side. The lake appeared peaceful under the sunshine and its banks were covered by colorful flowers. Linda told us that West Lake was famous not just for its beautiful waters but also for its surrounding hills with irregular shaped peaks and dense forests that provide gorgeous fall foliage.
We visited the Spring Dawn at Su Causeway first, which is a thin strip of land nearly three kilometers long covered with peach and weeping willow trees. Then comes the Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard. There were plenty of lotus plants blooming off the shores. The smell of lotus flowers was intoxicating. Then we visited the Autumn Moon on Calm Lake. There was a stone tablet bearing the etched calligraphy of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, which reads: “Autumn Moon on Calm Lake”. I was terribly looking forward to the evening so that I could appreciate the bright moon over the waters. The most romantic scene of the ten must-see attractions around the West Lake is the Melting Snow on the Broken Bridge. There was a well known folk story about this scene. It’s said on the bridge, Xuxian and a Bai Suzhen, who is actually a white snake met for the first time and they fell in love here.Retreating from the legendary bridge, we came to the Listening to Orioles Singing in the Willows, an imperial garden built up in the Southern Song Dynasty ….. We visited the “Ten Scenes of the West Lake” one by one. It was a collection of ten scenic views which were distributed around and within the lake, and serve to show the charms of the West Lake – through a use of varying locations, varying seasons, and varying times of day.
