I have Chinese tradition complex, hence I am interested in anything related to ancient China. Pingyao Ancient City is a must that I can’t miss.
I have visited many ancient towns in China, such as Phoenix Town, Lijiang Old Town. They are both populated by minority groups. But Pingyao is different from them. It’s the best-preserved historic townscape in the regions populated by the Han ethnic group.
Pingyao Ancient City is located in Pingyao County in central Shanxi Province. It was built during the rule of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty and has a history of more than 2700 years. It’s said that it was designed by Liu Bowen, a famous politician and strategist in Chinese history. Pingyao occupies an important place in the financial history of modern China. It was the location of the Shanxi Commerce and Rishengchang Piaohao, a kind of banking firm dealing mainly in the transfer of money.
Pingyao is also called Turtle City because the streets and roads make up moirés on the turtle shell.
Pingyao is actually a gray city. The sky is gray and the houses are gray. However, the gray color endows Pingyao an air of plain and peace.
I love its morning most. There is no noise. The city is like a old man, smiling and staring at his chidren.
