Drepung Monastery

Drepung Monastery, Lhasa About 8km west of Lhasa, just outside the city, is the Drepung Monastery. Built in the 15^th century, this jumble of white buildings stands out against the majestic Mount Gambo Utse.

The monastery was once the largest in Tibet and at its peak time there were more than 10,000 monks. It once served as the living palace of Dalai Lama before reconstruction of Potala Palace and where each reincarnation of the Dalai Lama received his training. It is now home to about 700 monks.
