Testimonials

Dear China Holidays:

China Holidays is the perfect company to help with the full Chinese experience and holiday arrangements. It is difficult getting around in China if you don't speak Chinese and the guides and drivers are excellent. The Mecure hotel in Beijing is a very good, centrally located hotel and they have English speaking people at the reception/front desk. Throughout our trip everyone was very friendly and extremely helpful and courteous. We were so pleased to have met them all and to have had such wonderful experiences. .......

Shopping and Souvenirs

Keepsake shopping can be a difficult proposition in a city that acts as a conduit for mass-produced factory goods that pass through to nearly every corner of the world. The latest wave of mega-malls with their supermarkets and fashion outlets aren't really suited for souvenir hunting, although often very good value for regular shopping sprees. One option is the bird market down at Huadiwan. Viewing stones and bonsai trees of the Lingnan variety along with ornately carved bird cages and accessories make wonderful keepsakes.

While not traditionally a centre of silk production, the fabric plays an important role in local textile industries and a wide range of goods, from suits and to dressing gowns and phone covers can be purchased at the brightly colored Haiyin Market.

A shopping street in GuangzhouIf you're looking for antiques, stop by Xi Guan Guwan Cheng near Fengyuan Lu and Longjin Xi Lu. Jewelry can be found at the historical Jade and Jewelry Street on Changshou Lu.

For the best selection of herbs and spices, head for the newly renovated market on Liu Er San Lu which is situated conveniently close to the White Swan Hotel. A seeming endless assortment of bugs, mushrooms and other assorted fungi spill out of bursting sacks, alongside every possible kind of dried herbs and flowers. Most of the bizarre botanical offerings are difficult to identify with even the largest of translation dictionaries, but the sights and sounds and above all the smells of this strange place make it an essential visit.

For an eye-opening alternative, try the wholesale markets around Haizhu Square, where the combined production of so many local factories is on display. Look for unusual items such as New Year decorations that represent the liveliness of local culture. Don't be afraid to bargain for items that can be found at many times the price at high-end department stores such as Xin Da Xin and the Friendship Chain.
