Boat of West Lake Hangzhou lies in the subtropical monsoon belt and receives its highest rainfall in May and June, but is partly sunny year round. National holidays are a crush as tourists from Shanghai flood the city. In fact, as Shanghai's economy rises, so does the population of Hangzhou; be prepared to leave early to catch your ride/flight/train out of the city – traffic jams are common. Also make sure to buy your tickets early, they tend to disappear fast.

Boat tours of West Lake are a fun way to get around the lake. The boats can drop you off at numerous destinations along the lakeshore or at the little islands dotting it. There are numerous docks where you can board the boats; tickets are RMB 35 for a single trip. Privately owned boats will usually charge about RMB 80 per hour for a tour, but you should be able to do some bargaining. The price of the boat tours doesn't include admission to the different sights.
