Local specialties include embroidery, cloth (cotton and hemp) clothing and decorative pieces; ethnic minority handicrafts are available most places. Beautiful goods are available, particularly embroidered clothing and home decorations such as tablecloths, pillow covers and large embroidered batik blue and white cloths that can be made into bed covers or used as wall hangings. There are also many different kinds of clothing if the loose and casual hemp clothes don't match your style.

There are also the standard silver rings, bracelets and necklaces, be sure to bargain. Many kinds of tea are grown here and tea shops are a great Chinese experience. Pressed cakes of tea are a great gift to bring home.

Jade from Myanmar is plentiful and of good quality. They can be found as bracelets, pendants and assorted types of jewellery. To see if your jade is of good quality, look at it carefully under a light and look for imperfections – it's best not to spend too much money on jade unless you're a jade expert.

Behind the Kunming Department Store is a bird and flower market which lives up to the expectations one would have for such a market in the Spring City. Go early to avoid the crowds. The Jixin Antique Market has numerous shops under one roof selling every antique imaginable.
