Shaoxing is just south of the Yangtze River where the scenery is picturesque throughout the year. The best time to visit Shaoxing is in spring, summer and autumn. Every year around early-April, the China Lanting Calligraphy Festival is held in Shaoxing. Calligraphers from all over the world gather in Orchid Pavilion, hold calligraphy symposiums, and write calligraphy. Shaoxing also holds an annual China Shaoxing Wupeng Boat Travel Festival.

There are several methods to get yourself onto of the ubiquitous boats. The Luzhen Yacht Company at Jishan Park on Huancheng Nan Lu offers two types of for hire at RMB 30 or RMB 50. The boats depart at 9:30am, 2:30pm and 7:30pm. The East Lake Wupeng in the East Lake Resort also offers rides. Entry to the resort is RMB 25 and hiring a is RMB 60 for up to three people in a boat, the resort is open from7:30am to 5pm.
