April to November is the best time to visit Huang Shan. Hiking boots or good sneakers are advised for climbing the mountain. Pay careful attention while walking the trails though, the scenery can be a dangerous distraction, especially at Celestial Capital Peak. Evenings are chilly, especially near the peak, coat rentals are available on the mountain. Many people have visited Huang Shan more than once because the scenery is distinct in each season.

Make sure you take your camera and plenty of film and batteries. The shops on the summit area are limited in what they stock and prices are a lot higher than back on Earth.

A travel permit is required to visit Yixian County. You can apply for the travel permit yourself at the Public Security Bureau in Huang Shan City, be sure to bring your passport. Foreigners are forbidden to stay overnight in Xidi or Hong Village, making it an enforced daytrip.
