Macao to develop world heritage core area

The Macao SAR government has outlined a plan for the development of its World Heritage core area and it will replan the old town around the ruins of St. Paul's to maintain its historical and cultural value and to improve the quality of its tourism offerings.

The historic center of Macao was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005. It consists of more than 20 historic buildings connected by squares and streets. The ruins of St. Paul's are considered to be the core area of this World Heritage Site.

The new plan is reported to connect the ruins of St. Paul's with key scenic spots nearby to build a comprehensive World Heritage travel network. It will include: the ruins of St. Paul's district, featuring cultural and educational tours; the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and O Porto Interio district featuring shopping; the Camoes Garden and Grotto district featuring dining; and the Tap Seac-St. Lazarus Parish district featuring creative arts.
