Lotus Festival Blooming in Beijing

Lotus Festival, Beijing

The annual Lotus Festival is blooming in Beijing at Yuanmingyuan Park, the Old Summer Palace. Entering its 17th year, the festival began on June 27 and has become an anticipated summer event for many Beijing locals.

Every summer, over 300 varieties of lotus flowers open to full bloom on the vast lakes of the Old Summer Palace. The spectacle attracts considerable crowds of locals, tourists and photo buffs. This year, to add in a little spice to the festival, the organizers have introduced new breeds of lotus flowers which are yellow, not the traditional pink or white. A series of concerts featuring pop music stars are also highlighting the festival.

The best way to take in the lotus scenery is to take a ride on one of the rental row boats and breeze through the sweetly scented air surrounded by the flowers. The festival will last until the end of August.
