CONSTRUCTION of the world's second seven star hotel will begin in Sanya, Hainan Province this year with a budget of up to 2 billion yuan (US$292 million).

The 120-meter-high hotel is expected to open to the public in 2011. It will be managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Inc, which manages 120 hotels in 23 countries and regions around the world, Beijing Times reported today.

Located in the center of Haitang Bay in Sanya City, the hotel will spread over 150 square kilometers and include a luxury yacht club, a golf course and the biggest ocean park in Asia.

It will be among another 20 five-star hotels in the area and will be a major landmark in Sanya when it is completed.

The hotel will be designed by UK-based W.S Atkins plc which designed the world's first seven-star hotel, the Burj Al Arab, in Dubai.

The Burj Al Arab Hotel opened to the public in 2005.

Sanya City will build two seven-star hotels, according to the city's urban planning authority, the Hainan Daily reported over the weekend.
