Visitors to Singapore museums increase

Singapore museums attracted a record of 2.5 million visitors in 2008, up 45 percent from the 1.7 million total in 2007, local media reported on Thursday.

The Straits Times quoted statistics by Singapore's National Heritage Board (NHB) that 60 percent of the visitors were local Singaporeans. The statistics include attendances to free, outdoor, non-ticketed events as well as ticketed events.

The increase was due to a combination of blockbuster events, community outreach programs and the opening of two new museums: 8Q,the contemporary art arm of the Singapore Art Museum, and the Peranakan Museum, the newspaper said.

The report said the NHB aims to attract more museum goers in 2009, with more programs introducing Singapore history and foreign culture, history and heritage.
